YAMAMOTO® RESEARCH
Yamamoto® Research Goji

The Goji is also called the "fruit of long life"; or "fruit of longevity"; by the Tibetans, who since ancient times have appreciated its nutritional and healthy qualities able to bring concrete benefits to the organism. Another natural "super food", a real energising multivitamin pool, handed down to us by oriental medicines, recently valued as a nutraceutical in "preventive" or anti-ageing medicine, as well as in sports. The market for food supplements is literally bombarded by multivitamins, considering however that many are synthetic products that supply vitamins "created in the laboratory". According to the latest nutritional research, "natural" vitamins are preferable to synthetic ones, since they "speak the same language" as our body. Goji is a truly natural concentrate ready for optimal absorption in times of need. Goji contains Vitamin A and C, all the B vitamins and others in trace amounts, mineral salts, 18 different amino acids, sterols and vegetable fatty acids, flavonoids and carotenoids. It quickly restores the stocks of vitamins and mineral salts, as well as providing a wide range of useful nutrients for the health of the organism, especially at certain times or periods to which we are subjected, from seasonal changes to various kinds of stress but also as support for an unbalanced diet.

Goji is in fact one of the richest antioxidant fruits in the world, with a very high "Orac" value, and for this reason it is one of the most highly valued super fruits of anti-ageing medicine. Goji berries are fruits produced by two different varieties of shrubs belonging to the Solanaceae family (which includes plants such as aubergine, tobacco, chilli, petunia, potato, tomato and many others) namely Lycium barbarum and Lycium chinense, both native to Tibet and temperate regions of China, although Goji berries are very popular fruits throughout Asia. They have been cultivated for thousands of years and are considered an essential element in traditional Chinese medicine, also known as the Lycium Berry (from Lycium Barbarum).Red-orange in colour, with a diameter of 1-2 cm and with several flattened seeds present inside it, the Goji berry is consumed on a large scale, by thousands of generations, by the inhabitants of the producing areas such as the Hymalaian area, China, and Mongolia, with the conviction that they preserve health by guaranteeing a long-lived life (even Korea, Japan and Vietnam make wide use of it, both for therapeutic and culinary purposes).

However in the past the individuals who were recommended to consume them were those who suffered from diabetes, fever, high blood pressure but also sight problems due to old age. Furthermore, its use was also very important for treating liver diseases, infertility, abdominal pain, dry cough, fatigue and headache. One of the many "panaceas" of oriental medicines, but with real health-improving potentials that have kept it relevant today and ensured its spread to the western world.

If Tibetan and traditional Chinese medicine use them to recharge vital energy (Qi), in particular that of the Yin meridians of organs such as kidneys, lungs and liver, modern phytotherapeutic research has confirmed its effectiveness: for example an important research study conducted by a team from the University of Sydney (Australia) has shown the presence in goji berries of an extraordinary amount of natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, vitamins and essential fatty acids, all able to protect the skin from the aggressive action of free radicals in order to promote organ health.

This super berry with a very rich quantity of phytoactive elements has remarkable benefits for our body, among these we find the presence of anticoagulant and antioxidant substances such as minerals, polysaccharides, vitamins and carotenoids which increase both physical and mental resistance of the whole body.

In addition to providing an excellent antioxidant action, which is the strong point of these berries, it has further fields of use, see an action to contrast the ageing of the skin, and goji berries help the cardiovascular system and support the functions of the immune system, thanks to the presence of four bioactive polysaccharides (not present in any other known species) called Lycium Barbarum Polysaccharides (LBP1, LBP2, LBP3 and finally LBP4). In fact, Goji is often recommended to increase immune defences during certain periods or in convalescent states. The LBP and the high content of carotenoids promote an increase in the number of white blood cells (lymphocytes), in addition to enhancing the ability of phagocytes to defend the human body from pathogenic agents. In this regard, in Goji we also find a natural derivative of Vitamin C (AA-2BG) which, in addition to acting as a powerful antioxidant, strengthens the body's natural defences, helping to protect the body from damage caused to tissues, cells and DNA resulting in diseases. In this respect, regarding their significant antioxidant activity, let us remember that the ultraviolet rays to which we are constantly exposed can cause problems to our skin or other serious problems. Goji berries in this case are another good effective preventive remedy, given their high antioxidant content, able to soothe skin inflammations and protect the epidermis from external agents.

Furthermore, the flavonoids contained, which have a powerful effect preventing the appearance of free radicals, contribute to reducing the risks of high cholesterol and hyperglycemia together with other oxidants, in fact recent studies have shown that goji berry extracts possess remarkable hypoglycemic properties. Those with high LDL cholesterol problems seem to be able to significantly reduce their level. Finally, Goji has been confirmed to be an excellent means of promoting ocular health.

We can define Goji berries as a real natural concentrate of phytoactive substances available to our health, they are a non-toxic product, however it is important to bear some recommendations in mind. For example, if consumed in excessive quantities they can in fact cause a sense of satiety and lack of appetite, in addition to stimulating complications in individuals suffering from intestinal disorders (such as diarrhoea), due to their innate laxative properties. Goji berries could create interference if taken at the same time as some anticoagulants, some heart medications, immunosuppressants and drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Given the presence of betaine and selenium, Goji berries are not recommended for pregnant and lactating women.
