Bowel transit support*

There are different medicinal plants that may have laxative, anti-inflammatory, but also carminative effects on the intestine. In fact, their regulating activity of the gastrointestinal function, is well known. There is so much talk about the intestine, and there will be even more talk about it due to the constant confirmation of its precious multifaceted activity involving the whole-body well-being. There are many issues that this organ can face, starting from constipation, which can have different "origins", which is often caused by an unbalanced diet or by the lack of fibre consumption. Or on the opposite side, from diarrhoea, which can arise from food poisoning, pharmacological or antibiotic treatment and for various viral or bacterial infections.

Lifestyle can also be a factor, since stress and strong or continuous strain of the nervous system, with emotions such as anxiety, can strongly affect the health of the intestine on a psychosomatic level, causing irritable bowel syndrome.

Among the most common and used natural phytotherapies agents, we find psyllium seeds, which are generally recommended for chronic constipation. These seeds have a very efficient, but harmless, mechanical laxative effect thanks to the presence of a mucilage. Once in contact with water, this substance swells and increases in volume, defined as a "mass form". Mucilages are polysaccharides of complex chemical composition, they are water-soluble fibres with a highly laxative effect, but they also have an emollient and protective effect for intestinal mucosa. Let's obtain more knowledge about its mechanism of action: once in contact with water, the seeds open completely, increasing in volume, up to 30 times, compared to their dry form. This reaction forms a characteristic gel capable of increasing the amount of faecal mass (here the definition of "forming mass"), which softens its content. This effect, well known in the gastroenterological and proctological field, i.e. to have this softening and lubricating action, makes it useful in case of hemorrhoids and anal fissures, in irritable bowel syndrome and in diverticulosis. Its effective properties and the fact that it is not harmful, makes it safe for constipation during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is also safe to be used for children and cardiopaths, who cannot take laxatives that can cause "violent" actions on peristalsis with strong muscle contractions. The effects of Psyllium are not by chance particularly appreciated for their safety and effectiveness towards even more delicate types of patients, because they act in a non-aggressive manner and clean the intestinal walls with their passage, facilitating the evacuation. For completeness it is worth noting psyllium's interesting versatility, useful not only in case of constipation, but also in case of diarrhoea, as it works by absorbing the excess of fluids and increasing the consistency of the faecal bolus.

The mucilage derived from Psyllium also has anti-inflammatory and lenitive properties on the mucosa. For this reason, it is also indicated to cure colitis and all the irritations of the walls of the gastrointestinal system.

Speaking of intestinal wellness, it is important to highlight that Psyllium seeds also have prebiotic properties. In fact, they have the ability to promote the growth of good gut bacteria, with a putrefactive action, to the detriment of pathogenic strains. All of this serves a great benefit for the immune defences, barrier activity and to improve intestinal efficiency in general, as well as in preventing colorectal cancer (attention: their fermentation gives rise to short chain fatty acids which, besides to act as a precious energy substrate for the colonic mucosa cells, they seem to exert a protective role).

Moreover, in an age of often improper or unbalanced dietary tendencies, caused by various reasons, or in case of specific health problems, it is important to remember that Psyllium also contributes to reduce intestinal fat and sugar absorption. This action helps decrease cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar levels.

Normolax® is a dietary supplement containing Psyllium, but which includes a further "prebiotic" component such as FOS (fruit-oligosaccharides) that resist enzymatic degradation of the gastrointestinal tract and represent the nutrient substrate of microorganisms. FOS are short chains of fructose molecules, which, fermented by intestinal bacteria, produce lactic acid and short chain carboxylic acids. These, in turn, enter as carboxylic acids, succinic acid and pyruvic acid in the Krebs cycle to produce energy at the cell level. The fermentation that occurs is extremely useful as it leads to a selective stimulation of the growth of bacterial strains constituting the "good gut bacteria" such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Numerous clinical studies have shown the usefulness of FOS and their prebiotic activity in favouring the development of good gut bacteria to the detriment of the pathogenic one, in both children and the adults. Furthermore, recent research indicates that FOS significantly increases butyric acid levels in the intestine, further promoting a protective action against inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the colon.

Normolax®, like all fibre-based supplements, if taken together with other drugs, can reduce intestinal absorption and therefore alter the effect, so they must be taken at least 1 hour before or at least 2-3 hours after ingesting Psyllium.

The use of Normolax® is indicated in the resolution of episodes of constipation that can be defined as periodic or "occasional". It is not indicated for the treatment of chronic constipation, where before any intake, an assessment and possible correction of the diet by the consumer might be necessary. It is important to dilute the content of one sachet in plenty of water. This will allow the formation of the characteristic gel, capable of restoring intestinal function and regaining its natural regularity, without irritating the intestinal wall. Ingest the content of one sachet, immediately after mixing it with water, fruit juices, freshly squeezed fruit juice, or even fruit smoothies or yogurt. Bear in mind that the normal gel formation is achieved while mixing the content with the drink or food, which is one of the typical characteristics of this product. It will be this gel and its thickness, to soften and moisturise the faecal mass and facilitate its evacuation.

Directions: add 1 sachet (5.5 g) in 200 ml of natural water, stir well and take once a day, immediately after preparation. A gel formation, which can occur if the product will not be taken immediately after preparation, is due to the nature of Psyllium husk.
