Osteocol Fortibone® is a food supplement that provides 10 g of hydrolysed collagen (FORTIBONE®) per daily dose. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, where it is the main constituent of connective tissue: it is found in tendons, ligaments, skin, cartilage, fatty tissue and bones. It therefore occupies a very important role among the structural proteins of our body, and contributes to the health and elasticity of tendons, skin, muscles, vascular tissue and even bones, and is an essential element in maintaining their physiological flexibility and elasticity.
Bone is a specialised tissue for supporting function: it is a mixture of mineral crystals contained in an organic matrix of collagen. Without this structure, also called the extracellular matrix or bone matrix, which has a 'scaffolding' or 'glue' role, bones would be extremely fragile and prone to breaking. Bone is therefore a very dynamic tissue with both building 'masonry' elements (the osteoblasts, responsible for the formation of bone matrix) and destroying elements (the osteoclasts, responsible on the contrary for the degradation of bone matrix). In this way, every 10 years or so, the skeleton is completely renewed. On balance, bone is lost when the destructive elements work harder than the builders: normally bone density peaks at about 30 years of age, and after that period it gradually decreases. Bone density loss in women also accelerates after the menopause, when physiologically bones become thinner, porous and brittle.
