Alkalos® A is a nutritional supplement based on Calcium Citrate and Vitamin D3. Treatment for the early stages of osteopenia and osteoporosis is usually composed of calcium and vitamin D3 supplement.
Calcium supplementing reduces bone loss, particularly in women after menopause, however some calcium based preparations can be more effective than others. Carbonated calcium absorption depends on gastric acid secretion, which could be limited in elderly subjects or could be affected by an anti-acid or anti-gastric secretors treatment.
Calcium citrate contained in Alkalos® A, on the other hand, is easily and completely absorbable.
Calciuria and radioisotope studies showed that the quantity of calcium absorbed after an oral administration of 2000mg of carbonate calcium equals that of a 500mg calcium citrate dose.
Moreover, calcium citrate reduces the risk of kidney stones formation because citrate is the strongest inhibitor of lithogenic salts urinary crystallisation. A correct acid-base balance through a correct diet is a demonstrated way to prevent the development of osteoporosis. A diet high in basicvalence is what plays the main role in bone metabolism. This is why a diet rich in animal proteins - as opposed to a mostly vegetable proteins one - could be concomitant in the development of osteoporosis. A faster bone tissue loss at the femoral neck level has been demonstrated in elderly women with a prevalence of animal proteins in their diets. In sum a balanced diet and a correct lifestyle pose as the best approach in osteopenia and osteoporosis prevention. Considering this, should nutritional habits or lifestyle be not appropriate Alkalos® Ais recommended to supplement a diet lacking calcium and vitamin D, supplying calcium of an alkaline nature, in citrate form, to favour in the meantime a correct acid-base balance.
