Dietary supplement
Daily supplementation of potassium alkalizing salts to facilitate systemic and urinary acid-base balance reinstating/mainteining.
Daily potassium alkalising salts supplement to help restoring and maintaining the systemic and urinary acid-base balance.
Daily potassium alkalising salts supplement to help restoring and maintaining the systemic and urinary acid-base balance. The bottle contains 153g of powder and a 5.1g scoop. Every bottle contains approximately 30 5.1g servings. Also included in the box a plastic bag containing 20 pH strips with relative colour scale.
Changed dietary habits, characterised by excessive consumption of proteins and fat, tend to shift our metabolism toward an extreme acidic load (1). This “acidifying” tendency, if prolonged, can contribute to kidney stones formation or osteoporosis development (2) which often manifest with a scarce number of citrates in urines and with an acid urinary pH (5.0 – 5.5). Maintaining these urinary acid values will most likely result in the precipitation of the uric acid and subsequent formation of uric acid calculi. Correcting this acidosis state will result in the dissolution and solubilisation of the urinary uric acid. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables represents the main source of alkalising substances, able to correct the excessive acid load (3). Dietary approach alone is not always decisive, and sometimes a nutritional supplement is required. This happens specifically in elderly subjects, post-menopausal women, subjects used to heavy sport activity or on a high-protein diet. LITHOSOLV is a potassium alkaline salts nutritional supplement capable of correcting the excessive acid load, which urinary PH is easy to determine thanks to the pH strips contained in the box.
Urinary pH is a value which variates often during the course of the day, with significant lows during the night and in the morning; this is why the best time to measure it is just after waking up. In case pH is lower than 6, and if confirmed by your GP, it is advised to correct the value by taking LITHOSOLV® both in the morning and evening, verifying its action with the appropriate pH strips. In presence of uric acid kidney stones it is advised to keep urinary pH between 6.5 and 6.8 to help dissolution of uric acid crystals (4). A daily intake of 2.5-3 litres of water is also advised to help dilution of urinary uric acid (4).
Before you take the medicine: Do not take LITHOSOLV if you suffer from hyperkalemia, or conditions that can lead to plasmatic alterations. Such conditions include chronic renal insufficiency, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.
If you are taking other medicines: Contemporary assumption of LITHOSOLV and Potassium-sparing diuretics (triamterene, spironolactone, amiloride) could result in hypekalemia. A regular kalemia check is advised in this case. There are no known interactions with other drugs.
Possible side effects: LITHOSOLV is generally well tolerated. During treatment very sensitive subjects may rarely experience mild gastro-intestinal disorder: abdominal pain, nausea and occasionally diarrhoea.
RECOMMENDATION: 1 scoop of LITHOSOLV every evening, preferably on a full stomach. The particular slow-release formulation allows a continuous release of the alkalising substances, ensuring constant pH values throughout the day. In case the urinary pH is still below 6 when measured on the following morning, it is advised to take an additional scoop of LITHOSOLV after breakfast. Empty the scoop in half a glass of water, stir thoroughly; the suspension obtained is for immediate assumption, due to the lipophilic nature of its micro-granules which ensure a controlled release of the alkaline salts contained. Its partial insolubility, which is in fact a characteristic of the micro-granular preparation, does not invalidate its efficacy.
BOX: The bottle contains 153g of powder and a 5.1g scoop. Every bottle contains approximately 30 5.1g servings. Every scoop contains 1.031g of Potassium bicarbonate and 2.228g of Potassium citrate, for a total 1.173g Potassium ions (30mEq). Also included in the box is a plastic bag containing 20 pH stripes with relative colour scale. How to use pH stripes: Collect urine in a receptacle, with dry hands take a pH stripe from the clear bag. Immerse the stripe in the urine for a second, pull it out and let the excess urine drip. The wet side should start changing colour immediately according to urinary pH. Within 2 minutes compare the colour of the stripe to the colour chart contained in the box. Read the value corresponding to the stripe colour closest match. Dispose of the strip in the rubbish bin after use.
Note well: colour changes in unused strips do not compromise their precision.
