The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has developed a classification, according to which, in order to identify PMS, a woman must report one or more of the following symptoms in the five days preceding her menstrual cycle: depressive symptoms, outbursts of anger, anxiety, irritability, confusion, withdrawal from social activities, breast pain, bloating, headache and water retention in the hands and feet.
One of the main causes of PMS is an imbalance of oestrogen and progesterone, the two main female hormones. Other factors may also influence this cyclical malaise: vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), A, C, E, magnesium, zinc and amino acid deficiency.
